Does Oppo still cash?

I find that I hardly ever use this stuff nowadays.

Kinja'd!!!

Instead I wave my phone at one of these. If I really have to (some purchases over €30) I use an actual card.

Kinja'd!!!

I went to Sweden recently, didn’t exchange any currency in advance and had no need to acquire any Swedish kronor while there either. You can use plastic for just about anything, even if you buy from a little market stall. If you live there you can use a personal bank transf er system called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for personal or small business transactions.

So is Oppo going cashless?

Depends I like real Farmers M arkets, Swap Meets and Flea Markets cash is still king in those areas. Plus fairs and festivals I’m still leery of handing my credit card over to a carney

I try to have enough to get out of most situations like slow service, the rare cash only place, bar minimums, tolls, etc.  I hardly ever use it, but nice to have the option.  Most commonly I’ll use it to pay for dinner/drinks when the service is really slow and I just want to leave.  Get tab, drop cash, leave.

I use it, but in the west there are still lots of places you should probably count on having cash on hand. I always keep about 40-50 in cash in my cars hidden. Its saved me more than a few times.

When I went to norway a decade ago most places took plastic just fine but we got stuck in the boonies one times because no one took our cards.  We had to jog 3 miles to the nearest gas station that would give us cash.

I use cash regularly when I’m abroad since my credit card doesn’t have no-fee international transactions.

Other than that, at home I use it only at the few cash-only businesses I encounter. I’m glad we stopped circulating pennies since we have enough change with the $1 and $2 coins.

Japan was a reminder why I prefer electronic payments since my friend and I always had ridiculous amounts of change, so we’d always try to get rid of it. The Suica makes things easier but it’s not necessarily accepted everywhere (like restaurants, for instance).

I avoid cash wherever and whenever possible in the US. But things like coin operated car washes and the occasional cash only establishment require me to carry some and visit ATMs sometimes. When traveling outside the US, I like using cash just because its fun to play with funky colored and shaped money.

A lot of people like using cash for gas but I just boycott any stations that charge different cash/card prices.

Cash is still King in a few instances already mentioned here.

Primarily I use it in bars, and for tipping.

I use cards abroad because I did some sums and found that even though I pay a forex fee each time the exchange rate was sufficiently better than the rate for buying phy sical cash that it evened out, more or less.

That’s interesting. Some places abroad are really good with conversion rates; Vietnam comes to mind as I found the exchange rates for Canadian or US dollars to be very, very good.

It’s a good tip, though; something I’ll have to keep in mind for future travel.

I use cash as much as possible, and any change less than a $5 goes in a jar at home. It adds up really quick and makes me second guess unnecessary purchases.

As others have said, I’ll tip as much as possible in cash. It makes a big difference to a server.

I also absolutely refuse to do any of that touch pay nonsense or payment apps.

Get off my lawn!

A few times a week, but just for small transactions.

I don’t change though, which is why I’ve spent the past few days sorting and wrapping a giant mint bag of dimes, nickels, and pennies that have been building up for years, since they’re just too annoying to use . I’m at about $400 so far, and still have more to go. It just reinforces how totally pointless and worthless the penny is, I hate that I have to do this to get rid of all the damn things.

Or to keep the restaurant owner from skimming the merchant service fee out of the tip.

I keep ~$100 on me in case I need it ($70 right now, if it gets much lower I’ll top off from cash laying around my place) , but I use it sparingly. I don’t think I’ve taken out cash from a domestic ATM since ~2012, whatever comes in to me from splitting bills, gifts, etc. is more than enough to keep my wallet full at the rate I spend.

Kinja'd!!! facw > HammerheadFistpunch

Kinja'd!!!0

I normally get ~$100 worth of cash at the start of a trip figuring that it should be enough to cover my share of any costs that can’t be paid by card, but is still small enough to be easily spent if I’m getting near the end of trip and still have it.

The exchange rate on cards is usually decent in my experience (I use my Amazon Prime Visa which has no foreign transaction fee, and a Charles Schwab debit card with international ATM fee reimbursement ). Certainly a better deal (probably even with a fee) than the exchange rate offered at the airport kiosks. You can get a better at change bureaus in the city you are visiting, but you often need money to get in, and they may not be especially common depending on the city.

I use it for sketchier stores out of fear for CC theft. Otherwise, I use my CC for every purchase to get that sweet cash back.

When I visited NY State over the summer I didn’t even bother grabbing any Greenbacks on my way over. Paid for all food, hotel, 7/1 1, and retail stores with my card. Some places require a zip code to pay at the pump for gas. So weird. Have to pre-pay inside. What a pain. Did you know that most places in Canada let you pump your gas before paying?

I’m new to the Google Pay game, and I must say, I like it a lot.

I guess that if you go to some place which is very dependent on foreign tourists they’ll encourage them with good exchange and maybe unofficial  rates. Otherwise it’s all very official with the rate being whatever the money markets say it is.
